The Process
I initiated the process by compiling a list of notable Black individuals, researching their contributions to society. Upon presenting this list to the client, feedback was provided to shift the focus towards Black sports figures, aligning with The Alliance's collective mission of social justice advocacy through professional sports. Additionally, the client suggested incorporating a group illustration, further enhancing the celebratory tone.
Drawing from this guidance, I selected Earl Lloyd and Althea Gibson as focal points, gathering references and sketching them in my distinctive style. For the group illustration, I focused on celebratory poses from renowned athletes and integrated them with imagery depicting a Black marching band, symbolizing unity and strength. I integrated typography into the pieces, handcrafting the word "Juneteenth" to wrap around the figures, enhancing the overall visual impact and narrative coherence.
